"I'm not going to ask you to help me stop him." Kahl knows, he hopes, that Zerxus wouldn't ask him to betray himself like that, but promising such things aloud never hurts.
"But I'm worried about what will happen, if the Admiral's hold on me is broken. I want you to have every tool you need to keep yourself safe."
"I don't know." He doesn't let the gut-wrenching anxiety of that reach his voice, as steady as the gentle stroke of his hand. "But I want to be prepared for the worst."
"I saw the whole barge ripped inside-out once. Like a flower made of stolen fates. Inmates all got their powers back for a little bit, but it didn't lose anybody."
"It is predictable. Strange and unpredictable are different things."
Trevor is going to cause a lot of damage, and maybe even kill some people, like that time Envy ripped a hole in reality in the Dining Hall. People will yell about it. The Admiral will say something catty. One of the corridors will smell of scorched plaster for a month. There will be another flood in a month.
"I hope you're right." He can feel the weight of Sarenrae's symbol in his pocket.
"All the same - I need to know you're safe, either way. If you feel it - if you can tell that I'm his again, and not my own - tell someone else. Stay away."
It's not that Kahl couldn't take him - Zerxus honestly has no idea, one way or the other - but he'd rather he didn't have to. Kahl has fought enough of his family.
